Expecting Twins? Wondering What to Buy? I have 2 sets of twins and can tell you it isn’t necessary to buy two of everything. There are some baby products that naturally you will need two of and of course you’ll need double the supply in nappies but there are some baby products that simply work better than other’s when it comes to coping with twins.
I have been through the challenging stages of parenting twins where safety and practical issues are key and I’m able to tell you that twin parenting frequently means thinking creatively to find practical solutions to the problems that come with having them.
For instance, how do you think you will handle feeding 2 babies at any one time, especially, if you only have one pair of hands at feeding time? How will you manage the sleep deprivation that twins can bring? How are you going to physically to bath 2 babies safely without washing them one at a time or using alternate days? You can’t carry 2 babies at the same time twenty four seven so what can you do to help when one pair of hands just isn’t enough?
In answer to the questions mentioned above, there isn’t any straightforward answer, twins are hard work but with the right baby products you can manage and make life far easier and essentially enjoy your babies.
Instead of splashing out on expensive cot’s, find out first how your twins like to settle; do they like to co-sleep or will they disturb one another? Take into consideration quite how much feeding you’ll be doing during the night and how much time your twins are going to spend in your bed during feeding. Are you going to breast feed your twins and if so where do you intend on doing it?
One of the finest baby products I have seen on the market is the Arm’s Reach Co-sleeper. I’m absolutely sure there must be other brands out there for co-sleeping if you look search , however , the Arm’s Reach fixes to your bed which suggests you can have both your babies in their own space but within, yes you have guessed it “Arm’s reach”. This is so beneficial when you have twins; otherwise you can be up and down all night settling one baby after another when all they are needing is a little bit of comfort and to know you are there.
If you’re making a choice to breast feed (and many twin mothers do it successfully) there are twin feeding cushions to help position your babies and these are particularly helpful during the daytime; perhaps not so much throughout the night when things are a little hazy because of lack of sleep.
If you’re taking the bottle feeding route then you will need a fine supply of bottles and a large steriliser but you’ll also have to work out how you could need to feed 2 babies at the same time. Recently there are some hands free options on the market that could well help when another pair of hands are not available. These systems are in no way a replacement for holding your baby and feeding them except for twin mums it can supply a solution and give twin mum opportunity to bond with one baby while other baby is happily feeding and then allowing twin ma to alternate for the subsequent feed.
Now we approach the issues of bathing twins; one pair of hands at bath time means only one baby in the bath unless you use a bath support. If you don’t opt for to use bath supports then washing your twins will be time intensive and time is a precious commodity when you have twins. Not merely will it be it’ll mean that one baby must be with you in the bathroom unless settled asleep; if one twin is in the bath and the other twin is some place else crying for attention you can’t just pop off leaving one twin in the bath to see to the other baby. You might take the path of alternating bath days but then your twins would be missing special bath time fun together. With this in mind I think that one of the most worthwhile baby products for managing twins has definitely got to be the baby bath supports. Begin with the ergonomic lay down type and as your twins get bigger you can progress to the upright baby seats; both types of seats are an absolute god send when you have two babies to bath.
Lastly, but by no means least, think very carefully before selecting your twin wheels; I know that there is plenty of trendy colorful, fun looking strollers out there but you need practical not goodlooking. You want to think doorways; can I get my push-chair in through my entrance without upsetting my sleeping babies? Can I move my twins easily from stroller to car; the travel systems with interchangeable car seats are a superb investment. You need to think shopping basket; with twin babies and a double pram you’ll have no capacity for carrying shopping.
